♣ Outside of Time

WE REALLY ARE limited in our thinking and one of the proofs of that is how we contemplate God – the world and even many who claim to know Him. Subconsciously we (generally) confine God to an era of time whether in the Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic epoch or the years of the first twelve disciples of Christ. The world is infantile in picturing Jesus with a long white robe and sandals, but so are many Christians.
God is not confined to time. He is eternal. What must that be like to witness the ineffable glory of God? It would be like asking a blind person to describe earth’s panoramic beauty from land to seascape, from sunrise to sunset in all of their breathtaking elegance. In this instance, we have as much spiritual sight as the blind. In time, to condescend toward us in our fallenness and weakness, yet outside of time and outside of an era’s culture, God is not bound or trapped in either time zones and neither can our imagination amount to begin conveying God in all of His beauty and majesty. Even the author of Revelation did not adequately express a true vision of God incarnate, for it is not yet permitted to behold the face of God and live.
Some of us may wonder what it would be like if Genesis, right through to the priests, kings, prophets and the Son of God entering our world began at another timeline; Jesus Christ dwelling among us now in 2025, rather than 2000 yeas ago, takes some thinking about. In what way would those Scriptures be written; what kind of language would convey Who God is, and how would the Word of God sound today? The heart of the message would be the same, but not in the way with abbreviated text messaging so prevalent today. There would certainly be articulation and in such a way all eyes and ears would understand. What would it be like? One can only imagine. It does, however, call us to ponder over what the Son of God would be like amidst our world of technology. The main point is that God appeared to humanity at the right time and God incarnate entered our world at the precise moment. What we do know is that Christ was unlike ANY other man. Before kings, rulers, authorities to the common man, woman and child, He baffled and confounded EVERYONE even though He was among us Who dressed, walked, ate, slept, cried and laughed as humanity was accustomed to, He was UNIQUE. Never before or after will such a man follow suit. The difference was He is God the great I AM. No other man had died such a death (in taking the sin of the world upon Him), and no other rose victorious from death in the way He did. Even though He entered our elements He was not controlled or restricted by them; although He spoke our language He was not confined by it; even though He lived according to our customs He was not bound by them.
He blended with the crowds. He didn’t stand out or have any unusual appearance about Him that drew the world after Him, but WHEN He spoke, the world stopped in wonder, for there has never arisen an orator like Him, nor will there ever be another who will speak as He did. That wonder was seeing light piercing the darkness; blindness gave way to sight; the deaf for the first time heard, the spiritually dead rose to life. Never had such love or hate arisen in the hearts of humans. Never was there a time before where demons begged for mercy, and neither was there any other moment where the kingdom of Satan was displayed to open shame and utter defeat. No other time displayed the miracle of captives being set free. Never was there such a time where Truth spoke unveiled, and never was there an era where Grace came in ALL of its glory. God outside of time entered our time, fully human yet still fully God that changed our calender like no other great has EVER done.
Does it not cause us to drop to our knees in helpless wonder, worship and worth-ship of Him being Lord of our lives? What can we give Him; what can we bring to Him? Nothing; there isn’t anything worthy we can give Him… except our lives and our reason for breathing – a life given to Him in reconciliation that we may bring glory to Him with a heart made brand new by the power of the Spirit of God.
Is God estranged from the customs of our day, the ways in which we’re so ‘advanced’ in our fourth industrial revolution and about to embark upon configuring and making it possible to live on Mars? Is God so far away from our era of time of the 47th US President, our UK Prime Minister, the sounds of a third world war breaking out, the entire globe being coerced into a platform of digital ID, the oppression, barbarism of terrorism, confusion over genderism, explosive rate of transgenderism, the race to transhumanism, the latest genre of music or the latest theatrical movies? Is He so uninterested that He can’t look upon it, upon us, because we’re so different? No, absolutely no way. Times may have changed but God is not limited to change to where He’s not ‘up to date’. We may have advanced but our hearts remain the same. The sounds of wars may be different and more sophisticated, but the hate of humanity has not altered. Our ‘deified’ scientific discoveries and explorations may gain the globe’s applause, but God still sees us as merely playing with toys compared to a life of what really could be lived. The same problems and warped endeavourment’s plague us as they did thousands of years ago. In light of wishing God did not exist, we strive for total autonomy, climbing the ladder of governing others – all to be God ourselves! The symptoms may look different but the root cause has ALWAYS been and WILL remain the same while godlessness pervades the human heart.
Is God so detached from all current-day injustices that are allowed to take precedence, from all the good that is scorned and evil adorned? Is He even aware, and if so, why doesn’t He intervene? Does He see, does He hear and does He even feel? We have no problems with our hearts being warmed by viewing our superhuman hero films, and if only someone like Superman – who hears every sound, sees every danger, and is there before time permits – would be real among us, then our chances of hope would rise to unprecedented levels. There is the longing, in admitting our limitations and incapabilities, for such a person to be present with us. These are just well-made films – pure fiction – that allow us to escape a world that has somehow gone drastically wrong. Nevertheless, that doesn’t negate an innate awareness that there is Someone Who has not been fabricated by man’s imagination. That awareness – weak or strong – has been built within us all; it is part of our inerasable DNA. That Someone infinitely transcends the greatest conjuring up of any superhero. This Person is real – more real than ourselves and the world in which we live. He once came among us and will return in yet further glory no eye has ever witnessed before – the God-Man, Jesus Christ Who is our Creator and Sustainer of ALL things. We may see all the upheaval of horror as world news either falsely or truly aires on our varied mobile screens that leaves us with a sense of dread. Where is God in all of this? We so easily forget we are finite with such limited understanding. It is no different to when our good parents went against our wishes as young children, preventing us from this and that, or not acting quick enough to resolve matters. We were right and they were so wrong! – so we initially thought, until we looked back in time and stood amazed at how wise our parents were in not acting according to our wishes and time-frames. We will ALL look back one day and stand absolutely floored by God’s inestimable and infinite wisdom in how He orchestrated the good and the bad, the joy and the pain, the excitement and the horrors, the clarity and the confusion, for we have the God Who works ALL things according to the counsel of His will.
What about the in-between – Christ physically left us, ascended back to heaven and He will return to us soon – how are we to live; how do we cope in this world? If only only He were still here! Oh the heart longings! Christ’s presence with us is now greater than when He lived among us over two millenniums ago. The Holy Spirit was given without measure and our witness of Christ is now ablaze with fire and authority. We limit ourselves to this three-dimensional world, failing to realise or recall that there are countless multi-dimensions, and God is not limited by any one of them; He made them! It’s us, it’s our minds that greatly limit our thinking! No wonder the apostle Paul stated to be renewed and transformed in our minds! We tap so little into the potential we have in God… we really do.
Have we truly reckoned with the reality of the truth that God works ALL things together for our good? I know we know that Scripture, and we can say it so much that we get bored of hearing ourselves repeatedly saying it, but have we realised and encountered the power of that truth? Does it burn in our hearts louder than all the pain we may now be feeling, all those unanswered questions and all the other realities around us? If we don’t, shouldn’t we be praying – and not stop praying – until we do?
Oh this God-Man is soon returning – outside of time to enter into it yet again, but so VERY different this time! In our life time or after? No man or woman knows. It wouldn’t be wrong to state that we shouldn’t be surprised at all if He were to come back in our living days – and so many of us wish that He would, but just as Christ first came into this world at the perfect time, so He will return at a moment no one else could ever outdo. That very moment is set in God’s mind.
Meanwhile we await and prepare – here – for our final glory where we shall see Him as He is. Think of that for however long you can; moments are not even enough to begin. We – shall – see – Him – as – He – is. Perfect vision, unclothed, no dimness, but absolute perfect clarity in beholding. Crystal clear would still not be sufficient to see the God of all glory; we will see way beyond such amazing vision.
We can behold Him NOW in our hearts, obey Him NOW, draw near to Him NOW, commune with Him NOW, and worship Him NOW.
“Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy… “ (1 Peter 1:8) – this reality is ours. Let us encounter it more so. It is limitless.
Soon we SHALL see Him!
