mercy of God

God’s answers to our prayers will come in ways we cannot take credit for ourselves.

  1. That’s the point isn’t it? This is what the church doesn’t understand. I see groups on FB called ‘The Power of Prayer’. Prayer has no power! As if we can turn on a light switch or something…prayer is humility and submission to a sovereign God. It takes pride and kicks it out the door.

When someone prays with the mindset that if I pray, I will make God do what I want Him to, you are an arrogant rebel deserving of God’s wrath.

We know full well what it means to watch God do something that was completely out of the blue. My van problems, your issues…we watch God move in ways we could never imagine.

Therein God receives the glory He deserves.

    • Power through prayer is something that has been so misunderstood today. It is one of the titles of E.M. Bounds books – probably the most authoritative person on the subject of prayer. Today it is using God as a sugar-coated daddy – a complete perversion of what prayer really is. Prayer is getting into God’s stride so that we pray aright and pray for the right things. Prayer is a God-given privilege of being let in on His secrets, a channel by which we are used for His plans and purposes.

It is God, all of Him. It is not my effort per-se that brings things about, but the Spirit interceding through us. We forget that, in fact it is not even heard of today – the mind of the Spirit working through us.

Have you read the book on Rees Howells by Norman Grubb called ‘intercessor’? I think you can download it for free. Well worth the read. Here was a man who was singled out in unusual ways for God. His life was fully surrendered to God that entailed a complete utter denial of self. Some theologians would have issues on some aspects, but such critics haven’t even begun to taste what prayer really is about. We have so much to learn. What an ignorant generation of Christians we are.

God does move out of the blue, you’re absolutely right. We may have prayed about something and then given up or even forgotten about it. Suddenly the answer comes that leaves us humbled and amazed. God indeed gets all the glory and we feel so unworthy to have our prayers answered. This is not to encourage indolence in the area of prayer at all but it teaches us that we are indeed but dust, but in His mercy God condescends to where we are and raises us up to the heavenlies… my goodness, that breaks me – that God could love a wretch like me.
